The Latin name of this cathedral is the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, which literally translates to "Our Lady of Paris". It was not until 1859 when its famous bell tower, La Tour d'Abbatiale, became structurally unstable and needed to be dismantled for safety reasons. This prompted a contest for architects to win through proposing new designs for rebuilding the tower. One challenge that faced these architects was coming up with ways to rebuild the tower without compromising its iconic look. The winning design by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc included a bell tower with a similar look to the old one, only that the new one is structurally superior and safe to use. The interior of the cathedral is arranged with a nave and two side-aisles, which are separated from each other by several large columns adorned with stone capitals. The flooring of the nave and side-aisles comprises white stones arranged in geometric patterns. The walls of the cathedral were once covered in frescoes but these had to be removed for safety reasons during renovations and reconstruction works carried out on them.
